A new report showing that a low calorie diet can reverse type 2 diabetes is as little as seven days has been published.
It comes from UK based Newcastle University and turns the received medical wisdom that it is impossible to reverse diabetes completely on its head.
Professor Roy Taylor, who led the research reports that fat levels in the pancreas dropped very rapidly. It is thought high fat levels inhibit correct production of insulin by the pancreas.
In addition, blood sugar levels dropped back to normal in a week. This is a clear indication that pancreas and liver function was returning to normal and well on the way to reverse diabetes.
How do you reverse type 2 diabetes?
The downside is that the diet requires Draconian levels of calorie reduction: just 600 calories a day. Tht compares with a more normal level of roughly 2,000 calories a day for women and 2500 a day for men – depending on your level of physical activity and age.
But, if the patient can summon up the willpower to maintain such a strict dietary regime, they can reverse diabetes without gastric band surgery or pharmaceuticals.
But some doctors, such as Dr Sarah Jarvis, doctors doubt if patients will have to willpower to maintain such a strict diet. They also point out that this method has indeed been successful previously, except for the fact the patients – having reversed their diabetes – invariably slid back into their bad eating habits, causing the disease to resurface.
