A five year study, involving 7,000 medical studies by a team of top scientists from around the world has now concluded what I have been saying for years: you are what you eat and do. And your choice of diet is one of the causes of cancer.
Nor is it any surprise being obese is another of the causes of cancer — increasing your risk by about one third, because a diet that makes you fat in the first place is largely made up of empty, adulterated material. So, not only do you put on weight, you also don’t get the health protection proper nutrient rich foods would give you.
It was also to be expected we would see the presence of the three other top villians: meat (particularly red meat), salt and alcohol.
Salt should be limited to 6 grams a day, which is all too easy to exceed, if you are a regular eater of junk food and even ready made frozen meals. Preparing and cooking your own food puts you in the driving seat , reduces one of the causes of cancer and takes control of your salt intake.
The dangers of alcohol consumption and health are well known.
But it’s also known alcohol can be beneficial — particularly red wine — but only in moderation. This study recommends two glasses a day, maximum, which is what we have been advocating for years. The French paradox is that their red wine consumption seems to make them immune from all those cheeses — whilst giving them large amounts of liver disease!
And, I have always advocated a diet that follows that consumed by the healthiest, longest living people in the world, such as the Okinawaians. Here there is a absence of meat, with fish being the main source of protein. Vegetables tend to be organically grown — again something recently proved to be far better than non-organic.
Finally, the residents have a lively interest in life and remain active right up to the end of their very long lives.
So, there you have it: proof positive that poor diet is one of the causes of cancer and you also take note of the link between alcohol consumption and health.
